Movie review: Gyllenhaalathon

Three movies, each with a Gyllenhaal. Am I reaching for themes? Perhaps.

Donnie Darko

A friend of mine just raved about this movie. Since I'm often drawn to indescribable movies, I was there. I was very dissapointed though. Very hard to follow, lots of lose ends and I kept expecting more eureka moments where the movie would be clever. Otherwise, it was interesting. I wish it did more at a faster pace.

It had both Gyllenhaals though.

Jarhead

Jarhead was okay. Again, very slow. I thought they could have done more to make it actually entertaining. Maybe it wasn't as eye opening to someone as desensitized to the horrors of the US military. Definitely not a fell good movie or anything inspiring that the trailers leads one to believe.

Happy Endings

This one featured the lesser known Gyllenhaal. Another one of those movies about a bunch of lives that are only marginally linked to each other. But the main story does unfold well and almost could have been expanded to the whole movie to pare off the extraneous ones. It involves Lisa Kudrow's character finding the son she gave up. The other two stories involves some gay couples having a baby and Tom Arnold sleeping with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Whatever. Had its funny moments too. Lukewarm.

Supernana

Mmmm... this should really be on the instructions on the back of the banana. And I'm sure it would be if bananas had a back. Amazing how a little nutella elevates the banana. I feel like it should be eaten with a knife and fork!

If only I had those little tin foil packaged individual portions of nutella, so banana remnants wouldn't contaminate the jar.

Castrato

Look at this perfect specimen. I must take extra measures to keep it in its prime.

Apparently, one can keep flowers longer by removing the stamens. Maybe so it can devote less energy to reproduction. Or taking away some wilting signals? We'll see if it works. I've done it to two blooms and left the other alone. So we'll see how much youth this buys.

Where the streets have no name

Cause french names don't count.

I'm finally back from my trip to Montreal. The days were long and exhausting. For the ones following the blog, I was in Montreal just in March. I've been away alot in the last month, but at least I get to stay in nice hotels and eat good meals!

It's got modern decor, free wireless internet, continental breakfast and the fluffiest blankets ever! I wanted to steal it! The shower there was also... interesting. It shares a glass wall with the room so that one can watch someone else shower from the bed. Or as I would like to think of it, allows you to watch TV from the shower. One of the coolest hotels I've been in, but I was glad to go home on Friday...

Or so I thought. We left for the airport and got there much earlier than I had planned so I thought we were home free! But the first kink came when our auto check-in dealy failed and the screen ordered us to report to the green triangle line. Of course, we were not alone and the line-up at the green triangle had already surpassed the length of the crowd control/herding cords. We then spent the next couple of hours inching towards the front, trying not to listen to the bits and pieces of information coming from the crowd. It was tempting to start my own rumour and see it spread like wildfire. It was that or pull the fire alarm.

Our flight was canceled. Alot of flights were canceled. All flights through Ottawa was canceled due to weather. Weather. Which means Air Canada doesn't care or feel they should do anything. Fortuneately, we were traveling on behalf of the company and had access to a travel agent that made other arrangements. The new flight was the next day though, and only to Calgary. So we had to retire to the hotel again, eat the continental breakfast (this time with sausages), fly to Cowtown and drive a rental car home late Saturday. Phew, it was good to be home after all that!

Best valentine's day ever

No, no date as usual.

Oh how nice it is to be away from the stigma of having no date on Valentine's day and sitting at home. I'm on a business trip in a strange city, so I have an excuse to sit in my hotel room instead! It's just me and my Charlie Brown Valentines and french Futurama.

Hmmm... I guess I don't know what's worse, being alone on Valentine's day or the anxiety of dealing with inflated expectations. Hmmm. Happy day for some, crappy night for others.

Anitsocial elbows

I had a fancy shindig at the Hotel Mac with the funding agency that's paying me. It was the yearly BioAlberta meeting. Speeches were good, especially the one by my CEO of course, and the food was very interesting. But alas, I was not able to enjoy the chitchat. The elbow rubbing. What do I have to say to total strangers in suits? What do they know of me in the suit I never wear?

Da Dam!

It's a little late but it's been hectic since getting back. I'm actually posting about my excursion to Amsterdam while in the middle of my next trip in Montreal. Oh it's so nice to have ready free internet access in the hotel. High speed internet penetration is just not as high in Europe. So frustrating. Make me realize hw dependant I am on my link to the web!

It was a rocky start. I came off the plane into a cloud of cigarette smoke and a zombie army of redeyed travelers making a bee line to the designated smoke stations and its token attempt at isolating the stench to a confined area. I waited what seemed like forever for my luggage, only to find it really was forever since everyone's checked luggage was lost. Not that they took the initiative to tell us, but instead waited till each disgruntled passenger to complain at the desk before the truth was out. Being the Canadian, I was the last to reach the disgruntledness threshold of complaining, and therefore, the last to leave with the promise that it was coming soon.

The next morning, we got the call. It was a bouncing baby suitcase! We rushed off to claim my prize. My night of sleeping in old clothes was over. Even though it was just in back of the car, I felt cleaner. My posessions were safe.

We then went on a little country drive to a little town/suburb. Nothing like the distances common to Canada of course, so we were there in a jif. Not really as many windmills and milkmaids in wooden shoes as one might expect. But it was really neat to have lunch in a small european town with cobblestone streets with a view of a little modest canal lock. Quaint!

My friend also had a little surprise for me. We went to the driving range! A popular passtime for us during his time in Edmonton. It was a bit nippy but it was a novelty to be hitting golf balls in a foreign country. It was one of those where you hit the balls into the water too, so bonus!

That night, he made a pasta dinner with chicken and zuchinni, which I will have to steal sometime. It was pretty good. I like zuchinni, but got overloaded when my mom grew too many in the backyard when I was young. I believe I'll have to rediscover it.

Then we went clubbin'! Boy, haven't done that in like forever! And to do it in Amsterdam at that! We began the night at an intimate little bar with a mellow and varied crowd. Things really got going next at this unmarked "underground" club. Well, not really underground. It was on the second floor. But it was some sort of regular event put on by artsy students that you have to know about to go! It's fun to go out to a club once in a while, and this one was pretty awesome! I left exhausted. We were also covertly offered a ride from a questionable gentleman while waiting in line for the bus. Probably not the smartest thing to get into an unmarked unlicensed taxi, but it was memorable!

On sunday, we took it easy. Went to a really nice science museum with tons of interactive displays. Puts ours to shame really, but it was slightly marred by the shear volume of screaming rugrats running around, occupying exhibits meant for *my* enjoyment. Museums was the order of the day on Monday since my friend started med school that day. I went to the Rijksmuseum, which had lots of historical and antique exhibits, crowned by works by Rembrandt, including his famous Night Watch. I ended my solo trek at the Van Gogh museum. My favorite was his painting of the bedroom. While there, I also took part in some sort of promotional video. They were looking for patrons to volunteer so I jumped right in!

The flight back was much better than the flight there. I managed to get a wink, had enough battery power to watch two movies on my laptop and time flew. Great trip but I was so glad to get home to my mudskippers. They grew so much! And they obviously like the new environmental arrangement I put together before I left. They were being nonchalant, but I could tell they were glad to see me.

Signal strength: Low

In this fleeting moment of forbidden internet access, I shall briefly update: in Amsterdam, lost luggage, staying at a friend's house, no underwear, found luggage, showered, saw countryside, went to driving range, went to unmarked club, got ride from unmarked taxi, went to science museum, rijksmuseum, van gogh museum, and coming home to sweet home tomorrow.

Schwabing!

Here comes the real Munich!

I am reporting from Munich, Germany on assignment meeting with a contractor that recently won a bid with our company. Pretty good perk for an intern huh?

Long flights were the order of the day in the beginning of course. Four hours to Toronto (where there was an amazing tank with dancing boxes), then eight more to Munich. Where a flight attendant asked if I had been a good boy when she handed me the ice cream that went with my airplane food. Our hotel is in the Schwabing district, which as far as I can tell from a one block radius around are just office buildings and heavy crow infestations.

Thousands of them, forming a canopy of crows squawking endlessly. I didn’t sleep a wink as usual on the plane so I was a walking zombie by the time we arrived. But having arrived during the day in Munich, we took the opportunity to see the famous Deutsche museum. This place had EVERYTHING! Exhibits on ships, trains, bridges, biology, music, pharmaceuticals, and the list goes on. Then our gracious hosts took us out to an authentic German dinner at a restaurant in a castle!

Paid for it the first day though where the meetings went all day and all night! Things slowed down a bit on the second day, where we even had time to literally run through a part of the old city, see a clock in a church go off with the fanfare of animated figurines. Then we also had some leibercasen, which is really fancy German spam. Pretty good though.

On Wednesday we went by train to Gottingen, to meet with another possible partner. Spent about 8-9 hours on the train that day going to and fro.

Thursday was much slower. Went through tons of boring documents, but had some time to check out more of the old city parts. Had half a duck! The skin was crispy, the meat was tender. Excellent. I was stuffed though!

Today, I head off to Amsterdam for a few days of R&R!
