Movie review: Gyllenhaalathon

Three movies, each with a Gyllenhaal. Am I reaching for themes? Perhaps.

Donnie Darko

A friend of mine just raved about this movie. Since I'm often drawn to indescribable movies, I was there. I was very dissapointed though. Very hard to follow, lots of lose ends and I kept expecting more eureka moments where the movie would be clever. Otherwise, it was interesting. I wish it did more at a faster pace.

It had both Gyllenhaals though.

Jarhead

Jarhead was okay. Again, very slow. I thought they could have done more to make it actually entertaining. Maybe it wasn't as eye opening to someone as desensitized to the horrors of the US military. Definitely not a fell good movie or anything inspiring that the trailers leads one to believe.

Happy Endings

This one featured the lesser known Gyllenhaal. Another one of those movies about a bunch of lives that are only marginally linked to each other. But the main story does unfold well and almost could have been expanded to the whole movie to pare off the extraneous ones. It involves Lisa Kudrow's character finding the son she gave up. The other two stories involves some gay couples having a baby and Tom Arnold sleeping with Maggie Gyllenhaal. Whatever. Had its funny moments too. Lukewarm.
